January’s weather on Koh Phi Phi is usually great, with uninterrupted sunshine and aquamarine seas around the island. The temperature is around 30 to 35 degrees and pleasantly cools off once the sun goes down.
Unsurprisingly, January is one of the most popular times to visit Koh Phi Phi thanks to the great weather and of course due to the Christmas holidays. Peak season pricing is in effect on Koh Phi Phi for the first half of January, pushing up high season prices another 20 to 30 per cent. From 16 January the prices drop back to High Season prices.
Despite how relatively expensive hotels are on Koh Phi Phi, it is strongly recommended to book accommodation in advance to ensure getting what you want and within your budget – the huge popularity of Koh Phi Phi means the island is regularly full during Peak and High Season.
The famous Maya Bay, as featured in the movie The Beach, and other excursions such as snorkeling are all readily available on Phi Phi in January – sea conditions are usually beautifully calm. It’s also a great time for scuba diving – taking a liveaboard boat to the dive sites around Phi Phi is a fun and economical way to see the stunning further-flung dive sites off Phi Phi such as Hin Daeng and Koh Haa.
