April is when Koh Phi Phi and the rest of Thailand traditionally becomes extremely hot, with temperatures regularly hitting above 35 degrees Celsius.
The weather on Koh Phi Phi in April is still fine and dry, with beautiful calm seas and lots of sunshine – but take care to drink lots of water and use lots of sunblock to fully enjoy your holiday. April is the last month of the high season on Koh Phi Phi before the rains start to come in May – if you’re unlucky you might catch some rain at the end of April but usually the weather is great all month.
Songkran On Koh Phi Phi
April is also the time of Songkran, the biggest festival in Thailand which happens every year in the middle of the month and is basically a week-long party. Originally a genteel water-splashing ceremony to mark the beginning of the Thai new year, it’s now become a nationwide water fight with everyone taking to the streets with water pistols, buckets, pots and pans to douse each other with water. It’s the perfect way to cool down in the heat of April and the celebrations go on for 3 days, although sometimes that gets extended by enthusiastic kids.
If you come to Phi Phi in April when Songkran is on, be prepared to party and to get very, very wet. On a practical note, make sure anything valuable like cellphones and passports etc are securely wrapped in plastic or something else waterproof or Songkran might get a bit stressful.
The visibility in the waters around Koh Phi Phi is superb in April, and it’s one of the best times of the year for scuba diving and snorkelling. Trips to Maya Bay and other excursions will all be running as operators make the most of the last month of the high season.
