December is when Koh Phi Phi becomes the most popular with tourists – and so the most crowded and the most expensive time too.
The weather in December on Koh Phi Phi is pretty much perfect, hence why it’s so popular – sunny skies, calm seas, no rain, some breeze providing a cooling zephyr over the island, and a pleasant temperature drop at night once the sun goes down.
From 16 December High Season turns into Peak Season which runs until 15 January – meaning that High Season hotel prices go up another 20 to 30 per cent.
Booking in advance is absolutely essential if you want to stay somewhere decent – the nice budget places will be sold out long in advance and even spending big money does not guarantee you will get value for money. Be sure to read previous guest reviews of Koh Phi Phi hotels to know what you are getting for your cash.
Also be aware that there is a trend for more upmarket hotels in Thailand to charge for a compulsory Christmas dinner and New Year’s Eve dinner – i.e. you have to pay for it whether you want it or not. This is obviously a poor way to treat guests, but if you book your hotel room over Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve check if this condition is in effect otherwise you might get a nasty extra surcharge when you check out.
The weather and conditions are also perfect for snorkelling, day trips to Maya Bay and scuba diving, so December is a good time to come to Koh Phi Phi if you want to fully explore the island.
