Thong Ta Kian Beach (also spelt Thong Takian and known as Crystal Bay) is a small beach on Koh Samui’s eastern coast, located between Chaweng and Lamai. Clear water, fairly small crowds and surprisingly good snorkelling make this one of Samui’s best beaches for day trips.

At just a few hundred metres long, Thong Ta Kian is one of Koh Samui’s smallest beaches. It’s not a major tourist destination and has little accommodation, aside from a few mid-range resorts located on and around the beach.
Thong Ta Kian’s biggest strength is its beautiful water. The beach has clear, calm water that’s surprisingly good for snorkelling, with a fair selection of fish visible on good days. You’ll find the best snorkelling near the large groups of smooth boulders at either end of the beach.
Is it as good as Angthong Marine Park — a popular day trip destination close to Koh Samui? No, but Thong Ta Kian’s peaceful atmosphere and clear water make it much better for swimming or snorkelling than Chaweng and Lamai, which can get a little too much boat and jetski traffic.
With a reasonable amount of shade, Thong Ta Kian is also a great beach for relaxation. Bring a great book and it’s easy to spend the entire day relaxing on the beach or enjoying a meal in one of the several restaurants in nearby resorts.
Easy to access from Lamai and Chaweng, Thong Ta Kian is a charming small beach that’s an excellent place to spend the day if you’re searching for a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere that’s often difficult to find on Koh Samui’s main east coast beaches.
If you decide to stay, there are a few good resorts on and around the beach offering bungalows and comfortable rooms. Just remember that you’ll need your own transport in order to get to the island’s other beaches and attractions without relying on taxis.
