Baan Khai is a sunny beach on Koh Phangan’s southern coast with fantastic views over Koh Samui. Quieter than nearby Baan Tai, Baan Khai has a laid back atmosphere, with a selection of beach bars and bungalow resorts making it a fun, chilled out and convenient place to stay.
One of several long, shallow beaches on Koh Phangan’s southern coastline, Baan Khai is an extremely popular place to stay. Cheap bungalows and budget resorts have made Baan Khai, as well as nearby Baan Tai, favourite beaches for backpackers visiting for the Full Moon Party.
Most accommodation on Baan Khai Beach is mid-priced or aimed at backpackers, with three star resorts and cheap bungalows, often without air conditioning, both easy to find. Since the beach is a short songthaew ride from Haad Rin, rates can rise before the Full Moon Party.
Baan Khai begins at the eastern end of Baan Tai and stretches down towards the small hills separating Haad Rin from the rest of Koh Phangan. The beach itself is wide and has shallow water that makes it better for sunbathing and relaxing than for swimming.
Like Baan Tai, Baan Khai Beach has a coral reef off the shore that can be snorkelled, although the shallow water makes it far from ideal. If you’d like to swim right off the beach, it’s best to take a passing songthaew to Haad Rin, which offers better swimming and deeper, clearer water.
In the evening, Baan Khai is one of Koh Phangan’s best beaches for watching the sunset, with a stunning view over the sea to Koh Samui. Beach bars and a great selection of Thai and Western restaurants make drinking and dining on Baan Khai Beach simple.
Although it’s far from Koh Phangan’s best beach for swimming, Baan Khai’s beautiful views of neighbouring Koh Samui, relaxed and chilled out atmosphere, cheap accommodation and easy access to Haad Rin make it a great hub beach for staying on the island.
