Half an hour’s drive from Ao Nang heading north west up the coast is isolated Tubkaek Beach. It is an ethereally beautiful place. Powdery white sand gives way to the shallow-shelving waters of the Andamans. Around are dotted beautiful and very oddly shaped islands. It seems almost like a beachfront view created by Tolkien. It’s marred a little by any look southward where a huge industrial pier of decaying twisted metal The northern end of the beach is national park and indeed the surrounds of Tubkaek as a whole have a fairly jungly wooded feel.
Hangover 2 Movie Location
A recent claim to fame for quiet and ethereal Tubkaek Beach was that it became a Hollywood set for the entirely un-ethereal Hollywood movie ‘Hangover 2’. This risqué, rumbustious romp of celluloid fantasy involved the chronicling of a flock of American only-just-post-adolescents traveling the Kingdom of Thailand searching for clichéd stereotypes to reinforce, involved extensive frat-house ribaldry. It proved very popular. (If you want to see the Bangkok landmarks featured in the Hangover 2, read this Hangover 2 Location Guide).
Hangover Filming At The Ritz Carlton Phulay Bay
It was the Phulay Bay Ritz-Carlton Hotel they chose for the set of part of the movie and to be fair it was a good choice. It is a place of rambling palatial luxury. An extension of the prestigious Ritz Carlton brand, it occupies one of the most stunning spots in Krabi. The vast palm tree-fringed infinity pool sits beside the endless emerald sea beyond, shades of azure merging with the pastel blues of a gentle sunset. The main reception sala is set amongst pools of water and at night a thousand candles (electronic of course) flicker into view.
One odd design flaw of the Phulay is that the roads you must be transported around by golf cart to navigate this palatial property were designed without anywhere to turn around! So all the staff have become dab hands at driving the whole property only in reverse gear. In high season, these little pathways become more clogged than the streets of Bangkok in rush hour.
Other Hotels On Tubkaek Beach
The Phulay is not the only luxury offering on or around Tubkaek. There are plenty of places to stay and they are all good. Other offerings include the Tup Kaek Sunset Hotel, The Amari Vogue, and Anyavee Tubkaek Beach Resort.
You can actually get some good deals on all these places and if you like a very quiet time, Tubkaek is the place to come. The Tup Kaek Sunset Hotel is actually closer to mid range than luxury, yet you have all the beauty of the region on your doorstep and, as they all are, it is right on the beach. The resorts are not too close together, they have some really good restaurants and it is an incredibly relaxed place. The whole atmosphere of the Tubkaek is different from anywhere else nearby.
