Ao Nang Beach sits directly at the end of Ao Nang town, making it one of the most accessible and most popular beaches in Thailand with a bustling mix of restaurants, bars and souvenir vendors.
Anywhere else other than Krabi, Ao Nang beach would be described as spectacular. In relation to the beautiful places in this vicinity it seems quite average. This is simply because the bar is set so high with all the beautiful places one finds around the province, like Railay Beach, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta etc.
Ao Nang beach still holds its own however with beautiful white sand, perfect waters for swimming and wonderful sunset views. The central part of the beach has developed very rapidly in recent years and is a busy maelstrom of restaurants, tailors shops, massage places and souvenir vendors, with western brands like Burger King amongst the mix.
As you move east up the beach it gets quieter and quieter and the road gives way to a pedestrianised walkway and then to sand alone. Above all, despite its commercialism, Ao Nang has escaped the worst brash excesses of sex tourism, noise and aggression that have become par for the course in other heavily touristed areas along the Andaman coast.
