Koh Tao is located on the east coast of Thailand, the other side of the country from Koh Lanta, which is located on the west coast. It’s a tiny island in the Gulf of Thailand, located above Koh Phangan (the home of the Full Moon Party) and Koh Samui.
Originally a haven for scuba divers, Koh Tao is now very popular with all types of tourists, from backpackers to families, who are looking for somewhere away from the craziness of mass tourism as seen in Samui or Phuket.
It’s only in the last couple of years that Koh Tao has seen the arrival of several luxury standard hotels and private villas for hire. While they are probably not true 5 star standard as you would get in a major city, they do provide very comfortable and sometimes unique surroundings on this remote island.
Most hotels and guesthouses on Koh Tao have upgraded to mid-range prices as the tourist market has changed on the island.
There are still quite a few budget places left on Koh Tao, but they are still more expensive than what you would expect to pay in Bangkok or other big cities in Thailand.
It’s monsoon season in Koh Tao from September through November and best avoided during that period due to rough seas and heavy rains.
