May is traditionally the beginning of low season on Koh Lanta. Before 2005 it used to be the case that many hotels, businesses and shops would simply close down and then re-open for the next high season in November.
However, since 2005, Koh Lanta has been staying open all year round. Some businesses still close down but the majority remain open. This is especially true in May because the weather on Koh Lanta is still great and temperatures start to get a little cooler. There is a little chance of rain, but it it usually very sporadic.
It’s a great time to come to Lanta for those on a budget as there are bargains to be had with Koh Lanta hotel bookings.

For scuba divers, the diving in May is spectacular – this is when whale sharks and manta rays are often spotted, and there are far less dive boats around. However, divers need to be flexible. Dive boats will make a judgement each morning as they set off about sea conditions – from May the sea can get quite rough and if this is the case, the boats will go to sheltered sites like Koh Haa or Koh Bida rather than attempt to go to ocean sites like Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. Therefore it’s best to have several days to go diving so as to avoid disappointment if there’s any days with rough sea conditions.
Please note that the express speedboat transfer to Koh Lanta does not run from May through to October for safety reasons in case of rough seas.
The Koh Lanta minivan transfer is available all year round.
