Surat Thani is a large fishing port which is of interest to travellers mainly as a way to head out to the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Phangnan and Koh Samui.
There is not a huge amount to do or see in Surat Thani but there is plenty of accommodation if you need to make a pitstop travelling to or from the islands. There’s also plenty of eating choices as well and restaurants that are well-used to catering to foreigners.
Surat Thani is actually the largest province of the South of Thailand covering an area of approximately 13,000 square kilometers. The name of Surat Thani mean “City of the Good People” but Surat Thani is also known as “the province of a thousand islands”, many of which lay off the coast in the Gulf of Thailand.
