Playing With Manta Rays at Hin Muang
Rob:We’ve had some amazing manta ray action during December so far. For the first dive of the day we decided to dive Hin Muang. A relatively deep site with the occasional strong current and because of these conditions it is really recommended for the more experienced diver. As we jumped from the boat and where bobbing on the surface cleaning our masks heading to the buoy line a frantic scream came from all the boat crew MANTA MANTA MANTA!!!!!!!!!
That was it – going down the buoy line was ignored and we all descended straight on to the dive site. For the first few minutes i couldn’t see what all the commotion was about, instead i saw some divers heading out into the blue, cameras angled out trying to get that perfect shot. Stay on the reef I told Jan and Dorthe my dive buddies.
Suddenly a speck of white grew bigger and bigger forming into a unmistakable shape as a Manta came gliding towards us. Wow what a great feeling! Especially when people look at you and go yeah! 2 minutes into the dive and could it really get any better.
This first video was when we where cruising along the top of Hin Muang pinnacle around 16mtrs deep. You can see the beautiful corals and it was so great to watch the Manta slowly glide in. Hope you enjoy the videos Keith! Sadly his camera stopped working on the dive
The video shows the Manta’s distinct shape and colour coming slowly and gracefully towards me. It just glides in with no effort and comes over the top. Don’t panic though it knows you are in the water and we never touch them!
Surprisingly it did get better, the Manta stayed with us for the full hour of diving. On our way back to the buoy line to make a safety stop we where even further rewarded as we followed one Manta leaving the reef another came in to view. Wow we have 2 Manta’s!!!!! What a great feeling and still another dive left.
When I came to the surface, besides all the happy smiling faces, I saw the Flying Seahorse, Lanta’s only liveaboard operator. Their guests were also enjoying the show. They offer Liveaboards departing from Koh Lanta and usually dive Hin Muang in the morning before any other boats arrive.
At Go Divewe dive Hin Muang / Hin Daeng twice a week Wednesdays and Saturdays. We can also arrange other days for you depending on your schedule just let us know.
Hope you enjoyed the videos and hope you get the chance to dive with Mantas.
